General Secretary, President To Lam Lays Wreaths at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial and the President Ho Chi Minh Memorial

As part of his State Visit to the Republic of India, on the morning of May 6, immediately following the official welcome ceremony, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam Central Committee, President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam To Lam, together with members of the high-level Vietnamese delegation, laid a wreath in tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial in New Delhi.

Mahatma Gandhi (October 2, 1869 – January 30, 1948) was a renowned political leader, revered as the Father of the Nation and the spiritual leader of the Indian people.

After laying the wreath, General Secretary, President To Lam wrote in the guestbook:

“The high-level Vietnamese delegation and I are deeply moved and respectfully commemorate Mahatma Gandhi — the great leader and symbol of peace, national independence, and the spirit of non-violence. His life and career will forever remain a shining example during the struggles for national independence in Asia in particular and throughout the world in general. Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals and determination will always serve as an endless source of inspiration for the spirit of self-reliance for the people of India, the people of Viet Nam, and all humankind.”

Following the ceremony, General Secretary, President To Lam and the high-level Vietnamese delegation laid a wreath in tribute to President Ho Chi Minh at the Statue of President Ho Chi Minh located in G20 Park in New Delhi.

The statue of President Ho Chi Minh is a project of special political and diplomatic significance, vividly reflecting the close bonds between the leaders and peoples of the two countries, as well as the special affection of the State and people of India for President Ho Chi Minh in particular and Viet Nam in general.

The statue was personally created by renowned Indian sculptor Ram V. Sutar, one of India’s leading sculptors, following multiple rounds of consultation and adjustments with relevant Vietnamese agencies.

The statue is oriented toward Viet Nam’s two major cities — the capital city of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
