1. General Information
Viet Nam has acceded to the Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents, concluded at The Hague on 5 October 1961 (Apostille Convention). The Convention will enter into force for Viet Nam on 11 September 2026.
From that date, public documents circulated between Viet Nam and Contracting Parties for which the Convention is applicable in relation to Viet Nam will require only a single certification, namely an Apostille, instead of the previous consular legalisation procedure.
An Apostille certifies the authenticity of the signature, the capacity in which the person signing the document has acted, and the identity of the seal or stamp affixed to the public document. An Apostille does not certify the content of the document.
2. Changes at the Embassy of Viet Nam in India
With effect from 11 September 2026, the Embassy of Viet Nam in India will cease accepting applications for consular legalisation of public documents issued by competent authorities of India.
3. Indian Documents for Use in Viet Nam
Applicants should directly contact the competent Apostille authority of India, as specified in Section 7 below, to obtain an Apostille.
A document bearing a valid Apostille may be used in Viet Nam without any further certification or legalisation procedure.
If the document is not in Vietnamese, it must be accompanied by a Vietnamese translation duly notarised or certified in accordance with the laws of Viet Nam.
4. Vietnamese Documents for Use in India
The Embassy of Viet Nam in India does not issue Apostilles.
Vietnamese public documents requiring an Apostille must be submitted to the competent Apostille authority in Viet Nam. Information on the receiving authorities, required documents, fees and processing time is available at:

5. Cases Where Consular Legalisation Is Still Required
Consular legalisation will continue to apply to:
a) Documents executed by diplomatic or consular agents;
b) Administrative documents dealing directly with commercial or customs operations;
c) Documents issued by countries or territories for which the Apostille Convention is not applicable in relation to Viet Nam, including the Federal Republic of Germany, the Republic of Austria and the Czech Republic; the Kingdom of Thailand until the Convention becomes applicable on 28 February 2027; Greenland of the Kingdom of Denmark; Tokelau of New Zealand; and countries that are not parties to the Convention.
6. Documents Legalised Before 11 September 2026
Documents that have been consularly legalised before 11 September 2026 will remain valid for use in Viet Nam. Applicants are not required to obtain a new Apostille for such documents.
Apostilles issued by competent foreign authorities before 11 September 2026 will also be accepted for use in Viet Nam.

Where India has more than one competent Apostille authority, or where a territory has its own designated authority, applicants are advised to contact the competent authority corresponding to the place where the document was issued.
