On the evening of 30 September 2025, the Embassy of Viet Nam in India solemnly held a reception marking the 80th Anniversary of the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam at the Embassy premises. In addition to Embassy officers and staff, the event was attended by more than 300 guests, including representatives of India’s Ministry of External Affairs and other ministries and agencies, members of the diplomatic corps and international friends, the India–Viet Nam business community, as well as a large number of Vietnamese overseas, students and scholars in India. The Chief Guest representing the Government of India was Mr. Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for the Ministry of Entrepreneurship & Skill Development and concurrently Minister of State for the Ministry of Education of India.
In his remarks, Ambassador Nguyen Thanh Hai underlined the historic significance of 2 September 1945, when President Ho Chi Minh solemnly proclaimed the Declaration of Independence, giving birth to the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam, today the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam. The Ambassador stressed that over eight decades Viet Nam has transformed from a poor country ravaged by war into a dynamic nation with a fast-growing economy and an increasingly high standing in the international arena. According to Ambassador Nguyen Thanh Hai, after nearly 40 years of Doi Moi (Renovation), Viet Nam has become one of the most open and fastest-growing economies in Asia, ranking among the world’s 32 largest economies and in the top 20 for trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) attraction. Alongside economic growth, Viet Nam has achieved important social progress—from poverty reduction, universal tuition-free general education, and administrative reforms to improvements in health-care services.
With regard to foreign affairs, the Ambassador emphasized that, guided by an independent and self-reliant foreign policy of diversification and multilateralization, Viet Nam now enjoys a broad network of external relations, has established diplomatic relations with all 193 UN member states, and maintains Strategic Partnerships/Comprehensive Strategic Partnerships with 30 countries. Viet Nam is a responsible member of the international community with meaningful contributions.
The Ambassador expressed sincere thanks to the Government, political parties and people of India for their longstanding affection, friendship and solidarity with Viet Nam throughout the past 80 years. He affirmed that the Viet Nam–India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has been, is, and will continue to grow strongly across politics, economy, defence and security, trade, investment, tourism, technology, culture and education. He highlighted the age-old civilizational and cultural bonds between the two peoples and the high level of political trust between the two countries as an important foundation to realize the vast potential for cooperation, to further deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and to contribute to each country’s development goals: Viet Nam to become a developed, high-income country by 2045, and India to become a developed nation by 2047, for peace, cooperation and sustainable development of the region and the world.
For his part, Minister of State Jayant Chaudhary expressed profound admiration and affection for Viet Nam, stressing that the 80th National Day celebration is a special occasion to honour the national pride and the indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people, as well as Viet Nam’s journey towards prosperity in the 21st century. On behalf of the Government and people of India, he extended warm congratulations to the Government and people of Viet Nam and to all Vietnamese friends attending the event. He affirmed that India–Viet Nam relations have a long history and have been nurtured by generations of leaders and peoples of the two countries. He recalled high-level exchanges, notably the State Visit to India by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in 2024 during which numerous agreements were signed; highlighted people-to-people and cultural exchanges, including the reception of the Holy Relics of the Buddha in Viet Nam (May 2025); noted the expanding economic and investment cooperation; and welcomed ongoing development-cooperation activities such as the restoration of the My Son sanctuary and scholarship programmes offered by India to Vietnamese students. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to working with Viet Nam to further deepen friendship and to advance bilateral cooperation in a practical, effective and sustainable manner.
The reception took place in a solemn and warm atmosphere, featuring the national-anthem ceremony, a toast, and the cutting of the cake celebrating the 80th National Day. Guests enjoyed a dinner with selected Vietnamese traditional dishes and explored a display of photos and videos about Viet Nam’s land and people.
