On the morning of May 24, the Embassy of Vietnam in India held a memorial ceremony and opened a condolence book to pay tribute to Comrade Trần Đức Lương, former Politburo Member and former President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, at the Embassy’s headquarters in New Delhi. The ceremony was conducted solemnly and respectfully, evoking deep emotion among all attendees.
On the Vietnamese side, participants included Ambassador Nguyễn Thanh Hải, all embassy staff and their families.
In a dignified atmosphere, on behalf of all attendees, Ambassador Nguyễn Thanh Hải recalled the great contributions and dedicated service of Comrade Trần Đức Lương to the cause of national development. Comrade Trần Đức Lương was awarded the Golden Star Order—Vietnam’s highest decoration for exceptionally outstanding service—along with a 65-year Party membership badge and many other prestigious national and international honors.
Comrade Trần Đức Lương left a lasting legacy in Vietnam–India relations, particularly through his official visit to India in December 1999. During that visit, the two countries issued a Joint Declaration affirming their commitment to elevate bilateral cooperation and signed several important agreements, helping lay a strong foundation for the robust development of Vietnam–India relations.
From the Indian side, many senior leaders came to pay their respects and sign the condolence book, including: Mr. Periasamy Kumaran, Secretary (East) of the Ministry of External Affairs; Mr. Doraisamy Raja, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI); and Mr. M.A. Baby, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) – CPI(M).
On behalf of the Indian government and people, Secretary (East) Kumaran extended heartfelt condolences, recognizing the former President as a revered leader who made remarkable contributions to Vietnam’s development and played an important role in strengthening Vietnam–India friendship. The CPI General Secretary expressed deep respect for Comrade Trần Đức Lương. In his condolence message, the CPI(M) General Secretary emphasized that Comrade Trần Đức Lương’s passing is not only a loss to the Communist Party and people of Vietnam, but also to the global communist movement—affirming that he will forever remain a shining star guiding and inspiring others.
Among the diplomatic corps, the event was attended by Ambassadors from ASEAN, major countries, strategic partners, and traditional friends of Vietnam. Members of the Vietnamese community in India, including the President of the Vietnamese Association in India and a group of Vietnamese Buddhist monks and nuns studying in India, also came to pay their respects, sign the condolence book, and express their reverence.
The large turnout and heartfelt, emotional tributes in the condolence book from Indian leaders, international friends, and the Vietnamese community in India reflect the deep respect and appreciation for the tremendous contributions of former President Trần Đức Lương—both in building and defending the nation and in promoting Vietnam’s friendship and cooperation with the international community in general, and with India in particular.
