King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan and Queen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck made a visit to Viet Nam from August 18 to 22 at the invitation of President Luong Cuong and his spouse.
On the afternoon of August 18, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck arrived in Ha Noi, officially beginning their visit to Viet Nam from August 18-22. This marks the first visit by Bhutan’s highest-ranking leader to Viet Nam since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 2012.
On the morning of August 19, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck laid wreaths and paid tribute at President Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, as well as at the Monument to Heroic Martyrs.
Also on the morning of August 19, at the Presidential Palace, President Luong Cuong presided over the official welcoming ceremony for King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck on their visit to Viet Nam.
Afterwards, the President and the King led their respective high-level delegations in official talks. During the talks, both sides agreed to promote cooperation in potential areas such as spiritual tourism, high-quality organic agriculture, and traditional medicine; and to work towards establishing direct flights to enhance cultural exchanges and people-to-people connectivity. President Luong Cuong welcomed Bhutan’s efforts to expand its relations through practical cooperation and affirmed Viet Nam’s readiness to facilitate Bhutan’s stronger engagement with Southeast Asian countries and ASEAN.
Following the talks, President Luong Cuong and King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck witnessed the signing of two cooperation documents: a framework agreement between the two Governments and an agreement on cooperation in the field of aviation.
In the afternoon of August 19, at the National Assembly House, Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Man held a meeting with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. The Chairman affirmed that Viet Nam attaches great importance to its friendship with Bhutan and wishes to further deepen this relationship on the basis of mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit. The Vietnamese National Assembly pledged to provide favorable legal and policy conditions to support investment and business activities of Bhutanese enterprises in Viet Nam.
Later in the afternoon of August 19, at the Government Headquarters, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. Both sides agreed to effectively promote cooperation across all areas. Viet Nam expressed its readiness to export products that Bhutan needs and in which Viet Nam has strengths, such as food, agricultural produce, consumer goods, construction materials, and electronic products, while also importing goods from Bhutan.
In the afternoon of August 19, at the Party Central Committee Headquarters, General Secretary To Lam received King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan. Both sides agreed to further strengthen mutual trust and ties between the two nations, enhance high-level delegation exchanges, and share experiences in state governance; create breakthroughs in economic, trade, and investment cooperation; and work more closely together while increasing mutual support at multilateral forums.
On the evening of August 19, at the International Convention Center, President Luong Cuong and his spouse hosted a grand banquet in honor of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Queen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck, and the high-level Bhutanese delegation.
As part of the visit, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan visited several localities as well as religious and economic establishments in Viet Nam. Madam Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet, spouse of President Luong Cuong, together with Queen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck of Bhutan, visited and offered incense at Tran Quoc Pagoda in Ha Noi.
On August 22, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck departed Ha Noi, successfully concluding their visit to Viet Nam from August 18 to 22 at the invitation of President Luong Cuong and his spouse.
